Soil erosion and sediment transport in Tanzania: Part I – sediment source tracing in three neighbouring river catchments

چکیده
Water bodies in Tanzania are experiencing increased siltation, which is threatening water quality, ecosystem health, and livelihood security the region. This phenomenon caused by increasing rates of upstream soil erosion downstream sediment transport. However, a lack knowledge on contributions from different catchment zones, land-use types, dominant processes, to transported undermining mitigation degradation at source problem. In this context, complementary tracing techniques were applied three Tanzanian river systems further understanding complex dynamics transport Analysis geochemical biochemical fingerprints revealed highly variable system that could be grouped distinct classes. These classes unmixed against riverine using Bayesian MixSIAR model, yielding proportionate for each catchment. indicated hillslope open rangelands maize croplands mid-zone contributed over 75% load all during sampling time-period. By integrating techniques, study demonstrated links between land use, Tanzania. evidence can guide managers designing targeted interventions safeguard both health quality.

Tracing suspended sediment sources in catchments and river systems.
Recent years have seen a growing awareness of the wider environmental significance of the suspended sediment loads transported by rivers and streams. This includes the importance of fine sediment in the transport of nutrients and contaminants, including phosphorus (P). Sediment source exerts a key control on the physical and geochemical properties of suspended sediment, including its P content,...
متن کاملGeographic information system and process-based modeling of soil erosion and sediment yield in agricultural watershed
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The study explored the capability of the geographic information system interface for the water erosion prediction project, a process-based model, to predict and visualize the specific location of soil erosion and sediment yield from the agricultural watershed of Taganibong. METHODS: The method involved the preparation of the fou...
متن کاملThe role of flow regimes for sediment transport and flooding potential of river catchments
The effective discharge constitutes a key concept in river science and engineering. Notwithstanding many years of studies, a full understanding of the effective discharge determinants is still challenged by the variety of values identified for different river catchments. The present paper relates the observed diversity of effective discharge to the underlying heterogeneity of flow regimes. An a...
متن کاملSoil erosion and sediment mapping in Aidoghmoush watershed appling MPSIAC model and GIS and RS technologies
Soil erosion is one of the important and worldwide environmental and economic issues. High amount of sediments accumulations behind the different structures such as dams requires several attempts to minimize their potential risks. Therefore, some quantified data will be needed in order to recognize those critical areas which requires urgent conservation. Since conventional procedures are time c...
